Congressman Lewis spoke about the hardships and hard fought victories of the Civil Rights Movement

On July 25, 2013, Venable co-hosted the Alliance for Justice’s Annual Summer Associate and Intern Event: “Civil Rights in the Balance: A Call to Action” featuring Georgia Congressman John Lewis and Jamelle Bouie, Columnist and Staff Writer of The American Prospect and The Daily Beast.

Congressman Lewis spoke about the hardships and hard fought victories of the Civil Rights Movement. Speaking proudly about the victory over public segregation, he said "Those signs I saw, they are gone, and they will not return. The only places our children will see those signs and generations to come will see those signs, will be in a book, in a museum, or on a video." Spurring the audience to action, he concluded by saying "You must find a way to stand up, to speak up, to speak out, to be brave, to be courageous, to lead, to be a headlight and not a taillight."

Venable Vice Chairman Brian Schwalb presented opening remarks. Summer associate Collier Johnson introduced Congressman Lewis.
