As a co-chair of Venable's Privacy and Data Security Group, Julia Tama is a trusted advisor and advocate for large and small companies in a dynamic legal area. Julia helps clients resolve privacy and security compliance challenges and zealously defends companies against government inquiries and enforcement actions. Her team is at the forefront of legal issues involving innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and connected vehicles. She takes a tailored, practical approach rooted in a fluent understanding of relevant technologies and each client's unique business model and goals.

Julia brings significant experience navigating complex enforcement matters under "unfair or deceptive" legal standards and other laws. She has represented entities in dozens of matters before the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), members and committees of Congress, and state attorneys general. Julia provides creative and sophisticated advocacy aimed at resolving regulatory or legislative scrutiny of clients' privacy, security, and advertising practices. She also keeps clients informed on policy and legislative developments and prepares comments on proposed laws and agency rulemakings.

With a particular focus on children's privacy, location data, adtech, and video streaming platforms, as well as the food and beverage industry, Julia helps clients manage risk through day-to-day product counseling, targeted risk assessment, and smart compliance programs. Julia draws from her enforcement and policy advocacy experience to provide clients with a risk-based and forward-looking perspective. She advises extensively on U.S. state privacy laws; the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA); financial privacy laws such as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) and state analogues; and the Digital Advertising Alliance's Self-Regulatory Principles. Julia also helps clients tackle data security challenges through policy development, tabletop exercises, and breach response.

Julia serves on the Venable Foundation Grants Committee. Prior to joining Venable, Julia served as Judiciary Committee counsel to U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY), where her portfolio included privacy, data security, consumer protection, child Internet safety, and foreign intelligence surveillance issues.
