Michael Gollin will be moderating a panel called "Building Vaccine Capacity in Developing Countries" with speakers from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, the Serum Institute and Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation. The panel will be held Tuesday, May 4, 8-9 am in room S403B.
Building Vaccine Capacity in Developing CountriesAvian flu and swine flu added urgency to the rising demand for effective vaccines worldwide, and the World Health Organization is calling for increased capacity to discover, test, manufacture, and deliver vaccines. But there are many technical, business, regulatory, intellectual property, and policy hurdles to vaccine development and technology transfer. This panel will present successful approaches and describe national and international initiatives to promote vaccine clinical trials and manufacturing in developing countries. It will also identify lessons from vaccine development projects in India, Brazil, China, Thailand and South Africa. The roles and motivations of various players (WHO, U.S. NIH, public-private partnerships and corporations) will be discussed.
Objectives:1. Outline current national and international initiatives for producing vaccines in developing countries.
2. Describe best practices for building sustainable vaccine capacity in developing countries.
3. Describe ways to overcome financial, technical, regulatory, intellectual property and institutional hurdles.
