George W. Wyatt
Associate

George Wyatt is an associate in Venable's Litigation group, where he focuses his practice on litigating Government Contracts and Construction disputes. His experience includes litigating bid protests before the GAO, size protests before the SBA, and claims before the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, U.S. District Court and local state courts.

Recent matters Mr. Wyatt has worked on include:

  • Appealing an agency's denial of a major defense maintenance contractor's request for equitable adjustment to the ASBCA.
  • Protesting an agency's failure to set aside a procurement exclusively for small businesses under the SBA's "rule of two." After the protest was filed at the GAO, the agency took corrective action, canceling the award and reopening the solicitation.
  • Intervening at the GAO to successfully oppose a preaward protest of a federal agency's corrective action in a billion dollar technical support procurement.
  • Defending a design firm in U.S. District and State courts against claims for both breach of contract and professional negligence relating to alleged design defects in the construction of precast and cast-in-place concrete segmental bridges.

Recognizing the growing importance of requirements for sustainable building practices in Government procurements of new construction, Mr. Wyatt earned certification as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP) from the Green Building Code. As a LEED AP, he has demonstrated an advanced depth of knowledge in green building practices and the requirements of the LEED Green Building Rating System.

Prior to joining Venable, Mr. Wyatt clerked for the Honorable Lawrence J. Block at the United States Court of Federal Claims. There he worked on cases covering a range of government contract matters, including bid protests, contractor's data rights, the rights of sureties to bring actions against the government, and contractor claims of differing site conditions.

Significant Matters

Mr. Wyatt's recent work includes litigation and mediation of design defects claims in the construction of precast and cast-in-place concrete segmental bridges. These disputes, in federal and state courts, have involved claims against designers for both breach of contract and professional negligence.

Activities

Mr. Wyatt is a member of the ABA's Section of Public Contract Law's Bid Protest Committee and Construction Division, as well as the ABA's Forum Committee on the Construction Industry. He is also a member of the Court of Federal Claims Bar Association.

Mr. Wyatt actively participates in Legal Services of Northern Virginia's Domestic Violence Attorney for the Day program in the Fairfax County Court System. In this program, local attorneys agree to represent victims of domestic violence, seeking protective orders on a pro bono basis. Through his participation in this program, Mr. Wyatt has obtained permanent protective orders on behalf of eight victims of domestic violence.
