Prior to joining Venable, Mr. Libowitz worked as a movie studio executive, producer, actor and screenwriter in New York and Los Angeles. He was the Executive-in-Charge of Production for In the Bedroom (starring Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkerson and Marisa Tomei), which was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture. On the other side of the camera, acting credits include recurring roles on both The Sopranos and Law & Order, and a co-starring role in The Believer, which won the 2001 Sundance Grand Jury Prize for Best Film.
Most recently, Mr. Libowitz’s work was shortlisted for an Oscar®. While finishing law school, he wrote a screenplay based upon his studies in National Security law. The result was The Response, a 30-minute courtroom drama based upon the actual transcripts of the Guantanamo Bay military tribunals [officially known as Combatant Status Review Tribunals or CSRTs]. A non-partisan look inside the process, the movie revolves around the tribunal of a suspected enemy combatant and the three military officers who must decide his fate. The Response stars Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show), Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek: Voyager) and Peter Riegert (Animal House, The Sopranos), and was Executive Produced by the University of Maryland School of Law and Venable LLP.
The film, which Mr. Libowitz also produced, was shortlisted for the 2010 Academy Awards® - best live action short film (one of only ten films selected worldwide), and has received other national accolades, including the 2009 ABA Silver Gavel Award as best of the year in Drama & Literature (past winners include To Kill a Mockingbird, Judgment at Nuremberg and Twelve Angry Men), as well as the Audience Award as best film at the 2009 Politics & Film Festival (Washington, DC). The film has screened at, among other places, the Pentagon, West Point, The U.S. Department of Justice, the French embassy, Harvard University, Columbia University, the University of California Los Angeles, George Washington University, the ABA, New York State and Connecticut Bar Association’s annual conventions and seven Academy Award® qualifying film festivals. The movie is shown in tandem with a post-screening panel discussion / Q&A detailing the issues raised in the film.
Following the film's Pentagon screening, Mr. Libowitz was invited to travel to Guantanamo where he served as a legal observer to the military commissions. Since 2008, Mr. Libowitz has served as a guest lecturer and panelist across the country discussing Guantanamo, U.S. detention policies and the "war on terror."
