Our summer program is the single most important source for associate hiring at Venable. In the summer of 2007, we had 27 students in our Washington, D.C. office, 16 in our Baltimore office, and several others in our Virginia, New York, and California offices. We made offers to 52 of the 54 students. Throughout the program, each summer associate has the opportunity to work on particular projects or matters in several different practice areas throughout the firm, including areas of particular interest to the individual. Our summer associates have the opportunity to work on a variety of ongoing matters, and they get to know, and work with, practitioners throughout the firm.

On average, each summer associate completed 12 assignments in the summer of 2007. These assignments are representative of the work our junior associates do. At the conclusion of each assignment, the summer associate is evaluated by the assigning attorney. A partner on our Hiring Committee also meets with each summer associate both midway through the summer and at the end of summer to provide feedback on his or her work.

On the social side, we have informal dinners at partners' homes, weekly lunches, an Orioles game at Camden Yards, happy hours, an annual pro bono reception and a special dinner for the summer associates hosted by our Executive Committee. In 2007, the Executive Committee dinner was held at the historic Willard Hotel in Washington.

Some additional features of the summer program include "Take a Partner to Lunch" and "take-alongs" with attorneys in the firm. The "Take a Partner to Lunch" program encourages summer associates to spend time with partners whose practice areas are of particular interest to the summer associate. Take-alongs can include attending hearings, spending the day in court, or sitting in on a deposition or transaction closing.

The 2008 summer program will begin on Tuesday, May 27th and will run for 10 weeks. For students who may have other commitments for the summer, we ask everyone to spend the first part of the summer at Venable and stay for at least seven weeks.
