Thomas F. Barry
Associate

Tom Barry is a registered patent attorney who practices all aspects of intellectual property law, with an emphasis on patent prosecution and technology transactions.  Mr. Barry has prepared and prosecuted U.S., international and foreign patent applications covering a wide range of technologies in the pharmaceutical, chemical and nutraceutical arts, including treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, obesity, diabetes, epilepsy, hypercholesterolemia and other disorders.  He has also prepared and prosecuted patent applications for novel pharmaceutical formulations and combination therapies, as well as for green environmental remediation technologies and industrial lubricants. 

Mr. Barry also represents clients in a variety of transactional matters including outsourcing transactions, license agreements, asset purchases, joint ventures and supply and distribution agreements. 

Prior to practicing law, Mr. Barry worked as a technical writer covering developments in pharmacology, medicine and health care.  He published numerous articles on advances in treatments for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, gastroesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcers, as well as one book covering the essentials of biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and physics for undergraduate students considering a career in medicine.

Significant Matters

  • Represented a major energy company in the outsourcing of its human resources operations
  • Represented an emerging biotechnology company in the purchase of IP assets related to cancer therapeutics
  • Represented an emerging chemical company in a variety of transactions, including the licensing of technology related to environmental remediation from a federal government agency and supply / distribution agreements with international partners
  • Represented a multinational food company in the acquisition of technology related to enhanced refining of food-based oils, and the licensing of related intellectual property
  • Represented an emerging pharmaceutical company in the licensing of its intellectual property rights to health care provider companies
  • Represented an international philanthropic foundation in the development and implementation of its intellectual property policies related to funded research, as well as the design and preparation of agreements with funded entities to implement those policies

Activities

Mr. Barry served as an Adjunct Professor of Scholarly Writing at the George Washington University School of Law from 2008 to 2011.

He is a member of the Steering Committee for Venable Venture Services, a program designed to assist emerging technology companies with an array of integrated legal services that provide a solid foundation for business success.
