In an article on September 10, 2012 The Washington Post mentioned Venable partner Glenn Ivey's role in mitigating former campaign aide to D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, Howard Brooks', sentence for crimes related to illicit campaign financing.

Brooks pleaded guilty to one felony charge of making a false statement to FBI agents about helping to channel unlawful payments to the campaign of a peripheral mayoral candidate and to Gray’s election effort. Brooks' sentence was reduced to probation, not jail, largely because of his cooperation with authorities. The Post highlighted Ivey's role in reducing Brooks' sentence, saying that "he argued in court papers for a sentence of probation, writing that Brooks knows he did something wrong and cooperated with authorities to make things right."

Partner Ken Slaughter and associate Gil Light were also instrumental in winning a favorable sentence for Venable's client.
