Venable partner Claudia A. Lewis and counsel Heili Kim discussed the potential and regulatory hurdles facing 3D printing of food with Food Navigator-USA in an April 15, 2015 article. While investing in 3D printing could open new markets and generate savings for food manufacturers and retailers, companies must first overcome regulatory and legal hurdles not yet identified. Lewis called the growth potential of 3D printing as "unlimited" while acknowledging the technology is not yet fully developed.

"Developing the technology, however, is only one part of bringing 3D printed food to market – the other part is ensuring the machines, processes and finished products meet FDA safety standards, which may not be advancing as quickly as the technology," said Lewis and Kim.
