Gitlin Elizabeth

Elizabeth Gitlin provides counsel on matters related to intellectual property (IP) protection and patent strategy. Elizabeth's patent prosecution experiences involve a variety of areas, including mechanical arts, electromechanical arts, and software integrated mechanical systems, spanning a wide array of industries that include aerospace, medical devices, consumer products, and autonomous navigation. She provides litigation support, advises clients on protection of their IP assets, risks of third-party patents and related mitigation efforts, and strategic growth and development of their patent portfolios.

Prior to joining Venable, Elizabeth was a primary patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). While at the USPTO, she conducted patentability examinations for wells and earth drilling equipment. Elizabeth also reviewed ex parte appeals with the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). A mechanical engineer by training, Elizabeth began her career as an engineer in the energy services industry.

Representative Matters

  • Advised on various fitness technologies, including equipment, systems, and methods. The fitness equipment includes, for example, wearable hydration devices and exercise shoes. The systems and methods include real-time diagnostics and monitoring. In particular, these are used to diagnose traumatic brain injury and monitor a user’s exercise motions to determine concordance with exercise instruction
  • Represented EMZ portfolio company FotoFinder Systems, Inc., a Germany-based global leader in skin imaging solutions, in connection with its acquisition of DermLite LLC, a U.S.-based handheld dermoscopy device company
