Washington, D.C. 7/2/01 --- Former U.S. Congressman Daniel E. Lungren has been named a partner at Venable, the firm announced today. Congressman Lungren, who also served as California's Attorney General from 1991-1999, is the latest in a series of high-profile additions to Venable's public policy advocacy group.
Over the past four months, former U.S. Senator Birch Bayh, former Assistant House Majority Whip James E. Rogan, senior Democratic National Committee member Thomas H. Quinn, and Patrick E. O'Donnell, a senior member of Republican Administrations since 1968, have joined Venable's public policy group. In addition, William P. Cook and Julian L. Shepard, both highly regarded for their experience in communications, regulatory affairs, and public policy, joined the firm in late April.

Congressman Lungren served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1979-1989, representing California's Los Angeles and Orange Counties. During that time, he was a member of the prestigious House Judiciary Committee and the House Select Committee on Intelligence.
He also served as Vice Chairman of the Joint Economic Committee Sub-Committee on Trade Productivity and Growth, where he was among the first members of the House to study the dynamics of Silicon Valley and make recommendations on appropriate tax, regulatory, and education policies. Congressman Lungren's legislative leadership prompted the Congressional Quarterly's authoritative publication, Politics in America, to describe him as, "a legislator of considerable substance, using a shrewd blend of partisanship, pragmatism and parliamentary skill to help pass major . . . bills."
Congressman Lungren became Attorney General of California in 1991, a position he held until 1999. There, he directed a $470 million annual budget, more than 5,000 employees (including 1,000 attorneys and 450 sworn peace officers), and 50,000 cases.
As Attorney General, Congressman Lungren successfully oversaw the largest eight-year drop in crime in California history. In recognition of his achievements, he received the Wyman Award, honoring the nation's outstanding Attorney General, from the National Association of Attorneys General.
Congressman Lungren is a honors graduate of the University of Notre Dame, and received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. He began his professional career as Assistant to the Co-Chairman and Director of Special Programs for the Republican National Committee.
He and his wife of 32 years, Bobbi, have three adult children: Jeff, 28, director of communication for the House Judiciary Committee; Kelly Vincent, 26, manager of the Oklahoma City office of Senator Jim Inhofe; and Kathleen, 25, a film production graduate of Loyola-Marymount University who just completed work on her fourth major motion picture.
