WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 17, 2005) – Bolstering an already solid base in the patent and intellectual property field, Venable LLP has added IP attorney Henry J. Daley, Ph.D., a former research scientist, as a partner in the firm’s Washington office. Dr. Daley, 48, joins Venable from the Washington office of Pillsbury Winthrop.
With the addition of Dr. Daley, Venable’s Intellectual Property Group will now grow to eight Ph.D.s. Before embarking on his legal career, Dr. Daley worked on government- and defense-related grants for one of the nation’s top research laboratories, and over the course of his career he has collaborated with scientists at elite research laboratories in England, France and Italy, as well as doing research as a visiting scholar at Yale and the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut, The Netherlands.
“The ability to master highly technical and focused knowledge has become a prerequisite for handling many of the complex patent problems that our clients face,” said James R. Burdett, co-chair of Venable’s Technology Division. “With his background in cutting-edge research science and broad experience as a registered patent attorney, Dr. Daley is a significant addition for our team.”
Dr. Daley’s practice is focused on counseling companies in all aspects of intellectual property protection and strategies, including patent prosecution, litigation, performing IP audits and negotiating IP licenses. He has managed patent preparation and prosecution portfolios in the semiconductor, photonics, optical device and medical device industries. He has also extensively counseled the world’s largest maker of photolithography systems, as well as several startup companies in photonics components, lasers, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), lab-on-a-chip MEMS devices, nano-electronic and nanotechnology devices, optical and radio frequency (RF) telecommunications systems, and RF transmitters and receivers.
“Venable’s substantial presence in the D.C. area and strong litigation, corporate and telecomm capabilities, as well as its high-level patent practice made the firm a natural fit,” said Dr. Daley. “A significant amount of the cutting edge work in the IP field will be coming out of defense, government contractors and homeland security work, all areas in which Venable is a leader.”
Prior to practicing law, Dr. Daley worked as a researcher at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory – famously known as the Radiation Lab in WWII – where he formed and managed research teams funded by the Department of Defense, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the FAA, and NASA. The research included technology related to a vast range of sensors and systems, including RF, infrared, and optical detection systems and signal processing algorithms and techniques. He also conducted research at Daresbury Laboratory in England involving Daresbury’s heavy ion accelerator and synchrotron radiation source as well as its supercomputer facilities. Dr. Daley’s work over the years resulted in collaborations with physicists at the universities of Oxford, England; Saclay, France (conducting electron scattering experiments); and Milan, Italy (conducting heavy ion scattering experiments). While a graduate student, Dr. Daley taught a wide range of physics courses including advanced laboratory courses for upper-level undergraduates and first- and second-year graduate students. As an undergraduate, he conducted photon counting experiments in the laser physics laboratory at Worcester Polytechnic Institute over a period of two years, which involved scattering laser light from solutions of sub-micron spherical particles.
Dr. Daley joins Venable’s growing Technology Division, which includes over 30 registered patent lawyers and agents who work together with technical advisors devoted to patent prosecution. The group has a cumulative history of having prepared and prosecuted many thousands of patents. Venable is listed in the current Corporate Counsel “Who Represents Corporate America?” survey as a “go-to” IP law firm by Viacom and is also one of only 14 law firms nationally to be designated to represent the National Institutes of Health in IP matters.
Dr. Daley earned his J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law, his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Arizona, and his B.S. with honors from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
