James J. Hanks, Jr., a partner at Venable LLP, was honored with the Distinguished Graduate Alumni Award by his alma mater, the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, at a Celebration of Leadership ceremony held at the law school campus on November 12.
Mr. Hanks, who received his LL.B. from Maryland in 1967 and was an editor of the Maryland Law Review, is the author of Maryland Corporation Law, the only current treatise on that topic, currently in its 25th edition, and is co-author of Legal Capital with the late Bayless Manning, former Dean of Stanford Law School.
For many years, Mr. Hanks has taught at Northwestern Law School, Cornell business school and Bucerius Law School, the number one ranked law school in Germany. He was honored by Bucerius in 2012 as only the fifth recipient (and first American) of its Medal of Honor in a ceremony presided over by former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt.
Mr. Hanks has also taught in China, France, the Republic of Georgia, Guatemala, South Africa and Zambia.
The Distinguished Graduate Award is given by the Law School each year to an alumnus/a who has achieved prominence through professional excellence and service to the Maryland community. Honorees are selected by members of the Maryland Carey Law Alumni Board, who review nominations for the annual awards.
