Joanna Breslow Boyd's practice focuses on representing clients in criminal investigations, civil government enforcement actions, and civil litigation, and advising clients on compliance and internal control issues. Joanna also maintains a robust pro bono practice, including playing a significant role on a team that is currently representing an Alabama death row inmate in a state habeas proceeding. This matter included an eight-day evidentiary hearing during which Joanna took the testimony of several witnesses. Joanna has also successfully obtained asylum for a woman fleeing domestic violence in her home country of Morocco.

Experience

Representative Matters

  • Participated as a member of a team conducting an internal investigation in Brazil on behalf of a multinational corporation, defending against allegations involving financial integrity. As part of this representation, participated in interviews of existing and former employees, and managed a team of bilingual contract attorneys in the review of thousands of documents
  • Assisted in representing a client in a contested sentencing after a guilty plea in a campaign finance case resulting in a sentence substantially below the applicable guideline range. Drafted and filed the sentencing memo and reply
  • Assisted in representing several non-U.S. national employees of a multinational company in a Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission Foreign Corrupt Practices Act investigation. Conducted client interviews, participated in negotiations with the government, and analyzed investigative materials
  • Worked as part of a team in defending a credit repair company in a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau investigation and enforcement action involving numerous issues under the Dodd-Frank Act and the Telemarketing Sales Rule.  Drafted a NORA response to the government and analyzed extensive materials relevant to the case
  • Worked as part of a team that successfully settled a qui tam False Claims Act investigation. Managed a team of contract attorneys and led the effort to assert and protect privilege over certain materials in responding to numerous government subpoenas
  • Assisted in representing the CEO and the president of a major manufacturing company in an internal investigation and multiple government investigations related to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
