Jeff Tenenbaum honored as Leading Lawyer

Washington, DC (June 15, 2012) – Legal 500, considered one of the most comprehensive worldwide qualitative guides available on legal services providers, has announced its 2012 rankings.  For the first time in the publication’s history, a Not-for-Profit category was created and Venable’s nonprofit practice and its leaders were recognized (one of only 12 law firms recognized in the category).  Singled out for a special mention was Jeffrey Tenenbaum, who was designated a “Leading Lawyer” in the field, one of only seven nationwide.  Mr. Tenenbaum chairs the firm’s Nonprofit Organizations Practice Group and is one of the nation's leading nonprofit attorneys.

Legal 500 quoted clients who described the nonprofit practice as “‘truly a professional’ group” noting that Venable LLP’s 12-partner team acts as general counsel for a mix of trade associations and industry standards organizations on matters including compliance audits, tax controversy and employee relations.

“This ‘very strong’ group has ‘tremendous depth,’ and is ‘excellent value for non-profits’” noted the Legal 500 write-up, praising the group for “doing its utmost to ‘protect associations while pointing out opportunities for improvement in the business model.’”

Among the individuals mentioned were George Constantine, who “imparts ‘impressive advice’ on new forms of governance structure while his colleagues expertly handle IRS examinations and litigation.”  The publication wrote that Venable’s group is proficient in other areas of expertise including tax advice, gift acceptance, grant approvals plus drafting and revision of fund agreements, noting that “[a] key client had recently instructed Brock Landry to devise a non-profit standards-making strategy, and the highly recommended Robert Waldman advised a major corporate fund on its grant-making program.”

Mr. Tenenbaum was described as “’smart and helpful’ and ‘very knowledgeable on board-committee dynamics and legal issues affecting not-for-profits.’”  Mr. Tenenbaum, with Of Counsel Jonathan Pompan, are recognized as “experts in the field of credit counseling,” and effective at utilizing their “sound business instincts and contacts.”

A record 51 Venable attorneys in 14 practice groups were recognized by Legal 500 in its 2012 rankings.

Published for over 20 years, the Legal 500 series provides worldwide coverage on legal services providers.  Their recommendations are based largely on the feedback of thousands of law firm clients and the opinions of thousands of rival commercial lawyers.  The guide is used by commercial, nonprofit and private clients, corporate counsel, CEOs, CFOs and professional advisers - as well as by other referrers of work - both nationally and internationally.  It is highly regarded for its definitive judgment of law firm capabilities

The “Leading Lawyer” selections are made from among all the recommended attorneys in a particular category and represent those few individuals, who, in the view of their peers, represent the highest standards of the category.

With more than 600 nonprofit clients nationwide, Venable has the largest concentration of attorneys in the country providing counseling and advocacy for charities, trade associations, professional societies, foundations, advocacy groups, hospitals, schools, and other nonprofit organizations.
