Venable LLP announced that Douglas G. Kremer, a broadly experienced marketing and strategy executive, has joined the firm as its Chief Marketing Officer. Mr. Kremer, based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, is responsible for leading the development and execution of the firm’s brand and marketing strategies, business development activities, and client loyalty initiatives.

Mr. Kremer takes over from W. James Noonan, who had been serving as interim Chief Marketing Officer since 2005.

Mr. Kremer, 53, has spent the last 25 years enabling companies, primarily in the financial services industry, to better position themselves in highly competitive markets. He has held senior marketing and strategy positions with such well known companies as American Express, Citicorp, T. Rowe Price Associates, J.P. Morgan, and CIGNA. 

Earlier in his career, Mr. Kremer developed his passion for marketing on Madison Avenue, working at leading advertising agencies N.W. Ayer and Young & Rubicam. Most recently he had been running his own management consulting practice, working with clients in the banking, health care, and non-profit arenas.

Mr. Kremer has extensive experience in creating meaningfully differentiated brands and corporate positionings. While serving as Global Head of Marketing Strategy & Communications at J.P. Morgan Investment Management, he helped the business position its mutual fund complex, its institutional money management products, and its joint venture with American Century Investments.

While at T. Rowe Price Retirement Plan Services, Mr. Kremer led the creation of a business strategy and service improvement initiatives, which produced top rankings in third-party client satisfaction surveys. The firm later capitalized on these rankings and client testimonials in its advertising campaign.

Given Venable’s recent establishment of offices in New York and Los Angeles, the expertise that Mr. Kremer gained in business and market development during his stints at Citibank, J.P. Morgan, and CIGNA should serve the firm extremely well.

In addition to his marketing, strategy and development work for leading financial service companies, Mr. Kremer has significant advertising agency experience. Of the many well-known accounts he worked on, perhaps none are as recognizable as his very first one - the United States Army. While at N.W. Ayer in the early 1980s, Mr. Kremer was instrumental in the research and development behind the creation of the memorable “Be All That You Can Be” campaign.  This marketing program ran in various forms for more than 20 years, and is one of the most widely recognized ad phrases in the last 50 years. It may have helped that Mr. Kremer himself served in the U.S. Army for four years (1975 – 1979), rising to the rank of First Lieutenant.

Mr. Kremer earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell University , where he majored in political science (1975).
