Washington, D.C., 10/08/01 -- Larry Thompson, Deputy Attorney General of the U.S., will deliver the keynote speech on the goals and ambitions of the Bush administration in the area of environmental crimes at the 10th Annual American Law Institute/American Bar Association (ALI-ABA) Conference on Environmental Crimes. Mr. Thompson will be the highest-ranking Bush administration official to speak publicly on this subject. The two-day conference, to be held on November 8-9 at the Westin Fairfax Hotel in Washington, D.C., is chaired by Jud Starr and Jerry Block, both former Department of Justice (DOJ) Environmental Crimes Section's Chiefs and presently partners at Venable LLP.

Among other distinguished faculty members are former Deputy Attorneys General Carol Dinkins and Eric Holder who will address whether it is better to negotiate or litigate environmental crime allegations. Another unique aspect of the conference will be a panel consisting of the present and five former chiefs of the DOJ's environmental crimes section who will discuss how the DOJ selects cases and decides who and what to charge.

Since 1947, ALI-ABA's Committee on Professional Education, a non-profit endeavor, has provided continuing professional education for lawyers on recent developments in all areas of law.
