Burnley recognized for Shipping & Transport Nationally and in DC, Walsh recognized for Public Law in Virginia

Washington, DC  (March 5, 2013) – Venable LLP is pleased to announce that partners James H. Burnley IV and William L. Walsh, Jr. were named the 2013 Client Choice Award winners by the International Law Office (ILO) and Lexology.

Mr. Burnley was recognized nationally for Shipping & Transport, and is the sole recipient of that honor.  For the second year in a row, he was also named the sole recipient of the Client Choice Award for Shipping & Transport in the District of Columbia.

Mr. Walsh was recognized for Public Law in Virginia, the sole recipient in his practice in Virginia to be so honored.

The 2013 winners were chosen from more than 2,000 individual assessments received worldwide. Winners will be profiled in the Client Choice Guide - USA & Canada 2013 and the Client Choice Guide - International 2013, which were launched at a gala dinner hosted in London on February 27, 2013.

Mr. Burnley focuses his practice on government relations and regulatory and legislative affairs, with a concentration in transportation matters. From 1987 to 1989, he served as the U.S. Secretary of Transportation and is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on transportation law and policy. He also served as Deputy Secretary of Transportation from 1983 to 1987 and was General Counsel of the Department in 1983. Public policy issues in which he is engaged include the continuing debate over public-private partnerships; climate change, including cap and trade proposals; the licensing of a privately financed multibillion dollar offshore LNG port; and the impact of the extreme volatility in petroleum prices on the airline and trucking industries.

With 30 years of federal and state government contract experience, Mr. Walsh represents federal sector companies who contract with the Department of Defense and civilian agencies. He represents clients locally, nationally, and internationally in issues including alternative dispute resolution and bid protests before the U.S. Government Accountability Office, Federal Boards of Contract Appeals, and executive agencies on contract administration matters, contract claims, contract terminations, teaming agreements, contractor qualification issues, organizational conflict of interest concerns and small business matters. He has served as lead counsel on numerous significant protest matters involving several billion dollars in contract value and has managed several substantial prime-subcontractor disputes including suspension and debarment matters and related civil false claims matters.

Established in 2005, the Client Choice Awards recognize law firms and partners around the world that stand apart for their excellent client care and the quality of service. The criteria for the awards focus on an ability to add real value to clients' business above and beyond the other players in the market. Firms and attorneys can only be nominated for these awards by corporate counsel.

Launched in 1998, the International Law Office (ILO) is an online resource providing tailored updates on global legal developments, a database of the world’s major deals and the legal advisers involved, and a comprehensive directory of firms and partners. Lexology, launched in 2007, is a daily newsfeed of law firm client alerts, articles and blogs. Lexology has an audience of over 185,00 subscribers, over 60% of whom are in-house corporate counsel representing the vast majority of Fortune 500, FT Global 500 and FT Euro 500 companies.
