Michael Gollin Fund for Public Interest and Intellectual Property established at Boston University School of Law
Washington, DC (April 9, 2014) – At its Annual Auction Gala last week at the Boston University School of Law, the Public Interest Project honored Venable LLP partner Michael A. Gollin
with its Innovators Award. It was also announced during the event that the Michael Gollin Fund for Public Interest and Intellectual Property has been established as an endowment at Boston University to provide a permanent source of funding for students working in public interest and intellectual property.
Upon receiving the award, Mr. Gollin noted that "service to others is the true path to happiness" and that especially because there are many good ideas that don’t succeed, we must celebrate those that do, like the Public Interest Project, which has thrived for 30 years.
Mr. Gollin and fellow students founded the Public Interest Project in 1984, and he was its first president. The group was originally conceived as an independent nonprofit, but was then established as a student-run organization to fund stipends for students to work in public service summer jobs as an alternative to law firm clerkships. Since its founding, the Public Interest Project has become the leading law student group at Boston University, and 900 students have been funded for jobs in nonprofits and government agencies. Today, the organization fosters a commitment to nonprofit, government, and pro bono
work and promotes community service for all interested Boston University law students and alumni.
A patent attorney and graduate of the Boston University School of Law, Mr. Gollin has three decades' experience in intellectual property law and related areas in the life sciences. He focuses on strategic counseling and IP monetization from Venable's Washington, DC office. Mr. Gollin represents pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies, and leading research institutions. His pro bono
work includes chairing Public Interest Intellectual Property Advisors (www.piipa.org
) and advising the ALS Association.
Boston University welcomes contributions for the Michael Gollin Fund and the Public Interest Project. Please contact Nate O'Connell at
