In an April 14, 2016 article, the National Law Journal featured a story on Venable's representation of unidentified businesses in the consumer credit counseling market in a suit against the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Citing a precedent for not revealing the identities of subjects under federal investigation, a federal judge ruled against the CFPB’s request to reveal the companies names publicly. In his decision, the judge said, “In general, we don’t disclose who’s subject to an investigation, because it can be grossly unfair,” and noting that an investigation can oftentimes overshadow any exoneration.
