Thora Johnson comments on delayed healthcare mandate in Baltimore Business Journal

1 min

Venable partner Thora Johnson was quoted in a July 3, 2013 article in the Baltimore Business Journal on the Obama administration’s decision to postpone penalties for businesses not providing health benefits to employees. The deferral alters the employer mandate under the 2010 Affordable Care Act, which requires employers of 50 or more full-time employees to provide health benefits or else incur fines starting at $2,000 per worker.

Johnson said the decision “does raise the question, ‘OK, so what else might be delayed?’” Even with the delay, she said, other key pieces of the healthcare law are moving forward. The state-run insurance exchanges are still queued for open enrollment in October, and the individual mandate requiring most individuals to purchase insurance is still operational.
