Venable partner Ashley Craig was quoted in a May 18, 2017, USA Today article on the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the digital economy. The Trump administration has formally notified Congress that it intends to begin renegotiating the trade deal with Canada and Mexico by starting a 90-day consultation with lawmakers. One aspect of the renegotiation expected to be a priority is the digital economy and a push by the administration for stronger intellectual property laws and increased enforcement against pirated goods by other NAFTA countries.
The administration may also push for an agreement against adopting domestic rules that would slow digital trade. "It's an acknowledgement that data is very much part of international transactions today," said Craig.
