USA Today quotes Larry Norton on states’ move to raise limits on political campaign donations

“The motivation in lifting limits on contributions to candidates’ committees and to parties is to help make them more competitive with the outside organizations”

In a December 15, 2013 article, USA Today quoted Venable partner Larry Norton about states increasing donation limits for political campaigns. This year, eight states have approved higher contribution limits with a ninth, Michigan, approving a similar measure last week. A Wisconsin state senate panel is scheduled to hold public hearings on increasing its contribution limit for certain offices this week.

Norton explained that “this is largely a reaction to the changed landscape after Citizens United where so-called outside organizations [such as Super PACs] are able to accept unlimited donations from any source and in some cases can outraise and outspend the candidates and the parties by substantial amounts.”

“The motivation in lifting limits on contributions to candidates’ committees and to parties is to help make them more competitive with the outside organizations,” he said.
