NEW YORK ( August 2, 2006 ) – Venable LLP announced that Edward P. Boyle, an experienced litigator, has joined its New York office as a partner. The addition of Mr. Boyle continues the steady expansion of Venable’s stake in New York , while increasing the depth of its national litigation practice.
Mr. Boyle, 38, joins Venable from Hoguet Newman & Regal, LLP, a New York employment and commercial litigation boutique, where he was a partner. His extensive litigation experience includes trials, motions, appeals, arbitrations, and mediations. He has handled a wide-ranging variety of litigation matters, involving breach of contract and business torts, employment disputes, copyrights, intellectual property licensing and federal antitrust laws. He has also done criminal and regulatory defense work.
Mr. Boyle has represented clients in industries as diverse as investment banking and financial services, insurance and reinsurance, accounting, auctioneering, advertising and marketing, food manufacturing, and Internet services. In 2000, he was part of a team of lawyers who brought suit on behalf of the New York County Lawyers Association to redress violations of the right to effective assistance of counsel in New York state criminal and family court proceedings. That case resulted in a state-wide increase in the rates paid to assigned counsel in criminal and family court proceedings in these cases.
Mr. Boyle’s recent victories include winning a motion for summary judgment of claims that a broker breached non-solicitation covenants and misappropriated confidential information in the course of performing services for clients of his former employer, and prevailing on the appeal from that decision. He also recently won a motion for summary judgment in federal court dismissing claims that an athletic footwear company and its advertising agency violated the Copyright Act by using plaintiffs’ idea in a national television and Internet marketing campaign. In 2004, he won an award of damages for an accounting firm in arbitration against former partners who had breached the terms of their de-merger agreement.

Mr. Boyle previously was in the New York office of Davis Polk & Wardwell, where he worked on a variety of litigations and investigations in the civil, criminal and regulatory areas. One of the more well-known cases he worked on was the criminal trial of former Sotheby’s chairman Alfred Taubman on price fixing charges.

Mr. Boyle received his J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law (1993) and his B.A. from Duke University (1989). At Vanderbilt, he served as Editor in Chief of the Vanderbilt Law Review and authored an article proposing new legal standards to address environmental discrimination.
An adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law from 2000 to 2002, he taught first-year law students legal writing, appellate advocacy and lawyering skills. More recently, he spoke on electronic discovery issues as a panelist in a program sponsored by the National Law Foundation. He is working on an article for publication discussing inadvertent waiver of the right to jury trial in New York state court proceedings.
