Retired Marine Colonel and former Bronx prosecutor handles all types of IP matters

New York, NY (May 7, 2014) – Building up its team of high-level intellectual property attorneys nationally, Venable LLP has added veteran IP litigator Ralph A. Dengler as a partner in the firm’s New York office.

Mr. Dengler joins Venable from Gibbons P.C., where he served as a director.

Mr. Dengler represents clients in patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret and unfair competition matters. His work has run the gamut of industry sectors, including companies in telecom, pharmaceuticals, food packaging, marine dredging, publishing and electronics.

Among his recent noteworthy matters are enforcing a patent portfolio for a leading telecommunications provider; litigating patent and trademark issues relating to oxygen absorbers and food containers for a food packaging company, and representing branded pharmaceutical companies in disputes involving generic drug manufacturers. He also continues to defend different entities against patent troll lawsuits.

Mr. Dengler also brings longtime service in the U.S. military to Venable. He recently retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, following a 22-year career as an Infantry Officer that included combat tours in Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1991 and the Global War on Terrorism in 2003 and 2007-2008. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a background in engineering, Mr. Dengler credits his academic experiences there for starting him on the path to sparking his interest in intellectual property. He began working on IP matters as an associate at Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto.

Mr. Dengler joins Venable’s growing team of IP attorneys in New York, including Frank M. Gasparo, head of the New York IP Group and partner Marcella Ballard, a prominent trademark and brand protection litigator. The Washington office recently added Andrew F. Pratt, who concentrates on representing leading technology and manufacturing companies in section 337 proceedings before the International Trade Commission.

Prior to going into private practice, Mr. Dengler was an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx, New York, handling felony prosecutions and investigations.

“Ralph Dengler is a great fit for Venable and complements the continuing expansion of our New York IP Group,” said Edmund M. O’Toole, managing partner of Venable’s New York office. “Our office has made great strides in the past year in adding patent, trademark and other IP specialties to the firm’s national IP practice. Ralph also has an excellent trial and enforcement background as a former New York prosecutor. Our entire litigation group will gain from his presence here.”

Added Mr. Gasparo, “A proven leader who performs at the highest standards in his practice, Ralph is not only an excellent attorney but an integral part of the IP Group’s increased visibility. Ralph brings a strong portfolio of litigation experience across a broad range of patent issues and in venues across the country. We look forward to having him on the team.”

“Venable provides an unparalleled platform for national and international clients regarding litigation of IP matters,” Mr. Dengler said. “The firm has a well-earned reputation of ethical, zealous and high quality advocacy for its clients. I’m looking forward to working with Venable’s stellar attorneys and staff on the front lines of IP litigation issues and complementing the other outstanding Venable practice groups.”

Mr. Dengler is a frequent commentator on patent and IP issues and was the editor of and a regular contributor to Gibbons’ IP blog, an activity he expects to continue at Venable.

A native New Yorker, Mr. Dengler earned his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law, his Masters of Education from the University of Virginia, and his B.S. from the United States Naval Academy.
