ROCKVILLE, MD (January 4, 2004) – Paul Kemp, a veteran Maryland and Washington, DC trial lawyer who has represented a number of high-profile clients in his more than three-decade career in private practice, is joining Venable LLP.

Mr. Kemp, 55, who was named by Washingtonian magazine as one of the 75 best lawyers in DC in 2002, and again in 2004 as one of the top criminal defense lawyers in DC, becomes a partner in Venable’s nine-attorney Rockville, MD office.

Among Mr. Kemp’s clients have been former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson and NBA All-Star Patrick Ewing. He also represented Midas Mufflers in a major class-action claim. Mr. Kemp’s practice focuses on white-collar crime, state criminal and criminal appellate litigation, as well as complex civil actions.

Mr. Kemp has been especially active in Maryland state government and state bar affairs. He is a former member of the Executive Committee of the Montgomery County Bar Association, and former president of the Maryland Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. He is currently president-elect of the Montgomery County Bar Association. Since 1991, he has served with the Montgomery County Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee.

He began his career as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Montgomery County, and thereafter was Assistant Public Defender in Montgomery County. Mr. Kemp was also the Deputy Federal Public Defender in the Maryland District. He spent six years on the advisory board of the Maryland Public Defender System. Mr. Kemp is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of 10 Venable ACTL Fellows.

“Paul brings eminent trial credentials, along with a distinguished reputation in the Maryland and federal bars,” said Paul Glasgow, head of Venable’s Rockville office. “He is a welcome addition to both our Maryland practice and our national litigation group.”

Mr. Glasgow noted that Mr. Kemp is likely to play a key role in Venable’s extensive white-collar and investigations work, along with the firm’s large caseload in complex civil litigation.

“I am pleased to join a first-rate litigation practice for what is quite simply one of Maryland’s finest law firms,” Mr. Kemp noted. “I expect to continue with my state criminal and appellate practice, while participating in a variety of litigation matters for the firm.”
