Firm earns top tier national ranking for advertising law and national rankings for banking, bankruptcy, commercial litigation and employment practices

WASHINGTON, DC (September 22, 2010) – Venable LLP has been included among the country’s leading law firms in a just-published ranking by U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers.

Based on a combination of client surveys, peer interviews and editorial research, Venable earned national Tier 1 honors for its Advertising and Marketing practice. The firm also received national recognition for its Employment, Bankruptcy, Banking and Commercial Litigation practices. Earlier this summer, Venable earned the coveted Award of Excellence, in the Advertising category, as well as top practice group rankings from Chambers USA and Legal 500. In total, 48 of the firm’s attorneys from across the firm were singled out by Chambers for recognition.

The inaugural edition of U.S. News/Best Lawyers’ directory spans more than 8,000 law firms of all sizes from across the nation. U.S. News is widely known for its ranking of universities and other national institutions, while Best Lawyers is the oldest peer-reviewed publication in the legal profession.

In addition to its national practice scores, Venable was ranked a leading firm in both Maryland and Washington, D.C. In all, 19 practice groups earned Tier 1 rankings in Maryland and seven in DC.

“Once again, we’re pleased to see so many of our practices – and by extension our attorneys – recognized for excellence by U.S. News, our clients and our peers,” said Venable managing partner Karl A. Racine. “However, we remain mindful that the most important recognition we receive is when a client, pleased with the value our legal work adds, decides to work with us again.”

Venable’s Maryland Tier 1 rankings included: Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization; Corporate; White Collar Criminal Defense; Employee Benefits; Labor/Employment; Energy; Environmental; Commercial Litigation; Health Care; Mass Tort Litigation and Class Actions; Mergers & Acquisitions; Non-Profit/Charities; Private Equity; Real Estate; Structured Finance; Tax; and Venture Capital.

The firm also received recognition for its Maryland-based Public Finance, Technology, and Trusts & Estates practices.

In Washington, DC, Venable received top-tier rankings for: Advertising; Banking & Finance; Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization; Environmental; General Commercial Litigation; Real Estate; and Trusts & Estates. Also recognized in the U.S. News/Best Lawyers rankings are DC-based Corporate, White Collar Criminal Defense; Employee Benefits; Management-Side Employment and Labor; Mergers & Acquisitions; and Tax.

In addition to Venable’s rankings, the U.S. News/Best Lawyers rankings website features a column authored by Venable chairman James L. Shea about the increasing importance of Washington-based law firms as the federal government undertakes the most ambitious regulatory overhaul in almost 50 years.

The U.S. News/Best Lawyers rankings and Mr. Shea’s column are available at www.usnews.com/bestlawfirms.
