Venable was listed in the 2014 BTI Client Services A-Team report as one of the top 30 firms worldwide for client service. Survey results were based on feedback from 300 corporate counsel in 15 industries including banking, energy, pharmaceuticals and insurance. The Client Service 30 represents the top firms out of 336 which make up the A-Team. Law360 featured news of the survey and Venable’s rise in two articles on November 18, 2013.

According to Law360, “Venable’s strong showing was due in large part to the high marks it received in three of the four metrics that are deemed most important by corporate counsel.” This includes a “commitment to help” which means focusing on problem solving and not billable hours, providing value such as alternative fee arrangements, and understanding a client’s business.

Speaking with Law360, Vice Chairman Brian Schwalb said Venable attorneys take the view that “clients have business problems, not legal problems.” Discussing the firm’s breakthrough year, Schwalb pointed to Venable’s willingness to listen to clients and use feedback to polish its practices. “We try to be open to constructive feedback and sometimes negative reaction,” Schwalb said. “We don’t run away from that — we try to tackle it and say, ‘OK, how do we do better?’”
