On November 9, 2014, the Washington Post profiled Venable partner Karl Racine following his victory last week as the District of Columbia’s first elected attorney general. Last Tuesday, Racine topped a crowded field of candidates winning by nearly 20 points. A former public defender, White House attorney, and Venable’s managing partner, Racine will lead a staff of 300 attorneys in defending the District in various legal matters. Formerly an appointed position by the mayor, the office was shifted to an elected position after DC voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum in 2010.
The Post highlighted Venable’s growth during Racine’s tenure as managing partner from 2006 to 2012 with the opening of an office in Los Angeles and expansion in New York. According to firm Vice Chairman Brian Schwalb, Racine took “a leave of absence from Venable and will formally withdraw from the partnership.” He added that Racine’s “client matters were transitioned to other attorneys at the firm months ago, when his campaign began to take off.”
