Venable partner Adam Hess
was quoted in a July 2, 2012 Law360
article on a recent announcement that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will open satellite offices in Silicon Valley, Denver and Dallas. Another satellite office is scheduled to open in Detroit later this month. The goal of the new offices is to entice more people across the country to apply to be patent examiners since working at the USPTO headquarters in Alexandria, VA will no longer be a requirement. The new offices should also help improve the quality patent examination and make the application process easier.
Commenting on the announcement, Hess said the new offices are a logical progression since the USPTO already allows employees to work remotely if they move to other parts of the country. “This is a step in the right direction to have the best-quality examiners and make sure the patents that are getting through the system are sound patents,” said Hess.
