Venable partner and retired Navy Rear Admiral Jamie Barnett
was quoted in a November 26, 2014 Bloomberg BNA
article on the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) role in "ad hoc" cybersecurity enforcement. At issue is a case where the FCC, without warning, required carriers to employ "reasonable" data security practices and notify customers of data breaches. The move, which came without the formal notice-and-comment rulemaking period, shows how serious FCC Enforcement Bureau Chief Travis LeBlanc is about tackling privacy and data security matters.
"LeBlanc previously served under California Attorney General Kamala Harris on matters involving the protection of consumer privacy and cybersecurity, including the establishment of California's first high-tech crime and privacy enforcement units," said Admiral Barnett. "So, he's the new sheriff in town, clearly with the imprimatur of the chairman."
