Venable partner Jamie Barnett appeared on the January 18, 2017, broadcast of Government Matters to discuss President Donald Trump's approach to cybersecurity and the people who will be his top advisers on the issue. Prior to taking office, Trump called for a 90-day review to form a new cyber defense assessment. Among those leading the assessment will be new CIA director Mike Pompeo and former Indiana Senator Dan Coats, nominee for Director of National Intelligence.
Barnett said while it might seem unusual for Pompeo and Coats, who are not identified with the cybersecurity industry, to lead the review, he noted that both have intelligence backgrounds which often deals with cybersecurity. He also pointed to the president's Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity as a nonpartisan resource giving the current review a leg up on its assessment.
