Venable partner Jamie Barnett was quoted in a May 17, 2017, Communications Daily article on the fallout of the WannaCry ransomware attack on federal government agencies. The worldwide attack that affected hundreds of thousands of users in nearly 150 countries threatened to delete users' computer files unless they paid $300 in bitcoins. While U.S. government agencies were not infected with the ransomware, the attack is likely to boost the government's focus on addressing its cybersecurity to prevent future attacks.

"Agencies may feel obligated to prominently highlight any existing cyber protections in their IT systems against ransomware as part of their response to President Donald Trump's recent cybersecurity executive order," said Barnett. He added that we are likely to hear more about the importance of mitigating ransomware attacks from the White House as it continues to push federal agencies to modernize their IT systems.
