Venable partner Jamie Barnett was quoted in a May 12, 2017, Communications Daily article on the president's new cybersecurity executive order. The order aims to modernize federal IT systems and directs the Office of Management and Budget and the Department of Homeland Security to assess the cybersecurity risks to all federal agencies. It also requires agencies to implement the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Cybersecurity Framework to help manage cybersecurity risk.
"There has been a lot of controversy about cybersecurity," said Barnett, but the executive order "is a significant step towards real cybersecurity risk management." He added that the order "builds on what was done before rather that attempting to displace it… This approach will improve cybersecurity for the government and industry as long as it is resourced and executed."
