On April 9, 2019, Variety released its "2019 Legal Impact Report," featuring the top in-house attorneys, litigators, and transactional attorneys in the entertainment industry. Venable partner Michele Mulrooney made her sixth consecutive appearance in the report. She was joined by partners Alan Epstein, in his fourth consecutive year, and Alex Weingarten, in his third consecutive year, in this year's report. Here are excerpts:
Mulrooney sees growing litigation from beneficiaries over multigenerational estate payouts. "The disputes are happening with greater frequency,” she said, because “we’re a more litigious society than before."
"Consolidation of the old media and emergence of the new" lands on Epstein's desk constantly, and, he said, "everybody is reacting to that in a different way."
Weingarten marvels that lines blur across Hollywood as companies expand both horizontally – into other businesses – and vertically. "There’s a lot of conflict, turmoil, and opportunity that comes with this trend," he said.
