Advertising Age quoted Venable partner Randy Shaheen in a December 17, 2012 article on the recent announcement that the director of the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Bureau of Consumer Protection, David Vladeck, will resign on December 31. Vladeck is credited with carrying out an aggressive regulatory approach to consumer protection during his three years with the agency.

Shaheen said that many advertising law analysts also expect FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz to step down soon. He added that since President Obama will appoint Vladeck's successor, there is little reason to expect any weakening in the FTC's more activist stance.

Regarding Vladeck, Shaheen said "He's revitalized the bureau" adding "it's been a very active three years, with a lot of new initiatives and guidance" on such issues as how to substantiate health claims, privacy and environmental marketing.
