Shannon Yavorsky and Kimberly Culp's article, "Augmented Reality Legal Issues are Very Real," was published in the July 3, 2017, issue of Intellectual Property. Here is an excerpt from the article:

Augmented Reality (AR) has the ability to blur the lines between reality and computer-generated information. AR may also change the way we work. Architects in various locations around the world may be able to, in real time and in 3D manipulate the designs of buildings.

Virtual Reality (VR) is farther along the spectrum of computer-generated content and involves the creation of an immersive wholly computer-generated environment. VR is being used to train people in various industries, such as the military and medicine.

AR and VR are being used for recreation, most notably video games. Brands are using VR and AR (and 360 videos) to reach their markets.

The point? These technologies are mainstream and if your company is not yet using them, it will be. Are you ready? This article looks at certain intellectual property and privacy issues to consider as your company moves into this space. We also provide some suggestions about the ways in which practitioners can practically address concerns that may arise.
