Bety Javidzad

Counsel

Bety Javidzad successfully litigates complex commercial disputes in state and federal courts nationwide. She has significant experience in the FinTech, financial service, consumer credit, consumer product, and consumer protection industries. Bety's practice includes a particular emphasis on contract disputes; false advertising; class action defense of TCPA and various state consumer protection law claims; business torts, including fraud and business competition; and intellectual property law.

Bety has extensive experience handling all aspects of the litigation, arbitration, and appellate processes, with a strong track record of resolving matters for her clients through early-stage strategy and communication, negotiated settlement, mediation, trial, and arbitration. She is recognized by her clients for navigating the most direct and efficient route to victory, and keeping the client’s best interests in mind. Bety also advises her clients on how to proactively protect themselves from litigation exposure.

Prior to joining Venable, Bety was a senior associate at Hogan Lovells US LLP in Los Angeles. Bety also served as a judicial extern for the Honorable Dean D. Pregerson of the Central District of California.

Bety is fluent in Farsi, and proficient in Spanish.

Representative Clients

Bety represents and counsels her FinTech and corporate clients in contract, advertising, and business tort disputes. She also represents retail, advertising, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and dietary supplement companies in competitor actions, consumer class actions, and business and intellectual property disputes.

Significant Matters

  • Served as lead counsel and successfully defended well-known client in the financial technology industry in two multi-million dollar breach of contract and business fraud actions in federal court, including obtaining dismissal of plaintiff’s fraud claim with prejudice.
  • Successfully defeated antitrust claims against one of the largest bar associations in high-profile California federal court action, including obtaining dismissal of all claims with prejudice.
  • Successfully tried and obtained judgment in favor of client in the transportation industry in two separate breach of lease disputes.
  • Represented dietary supplement company in class action involving claims of false advertising relating to the actual amount of certain active ingredients contained in their products.
  • Represented product manufacturer in competitor action for false advertising.
  • Defended pharmaceutical company in Lanham Act action.
  • Representing food company in slack-fill and false advertising class actions.
  • Representing consumer services company in a TPCA class action.
  • Representing well-known online retailer in highly contentious breach of contract and business fraud dispute.
  • Representing online direct response marketer in various actions including breach of contract, class action dispute, and preference action.
  • Represented one of the nation’s largest providers of advertising and promotions in supermarkets in connection with a multi-million dollar suit involving various state and federal false advertising and antitrust claims. Drafted motion in unsettled area of law, contributing to settlement during trial.
  • Represented financial service company in multidistrict litigation involving multiple class actions under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, as well as class actions relating to debt collection. Represented developer of pay-tv technology in a $1.6 billion piracy lawsuit, resulting in a very favorable jury verdict.
  • Successfully represented a major social networking service and obtained a dismissal of all claims on the grounds that they were barred by Section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act. 
  • Successfully dismissed fiduciary duty and securities claims against former officers and directors of an Internet marketing company in connection with shareholder class action, leading to settlement.
  • Obtained favorable ruling from the Ninth Circuit on behalf of a major American motion picture studio, reversing district court’s denial of personal jurisdiction over German national.
  • Successfully defended major product and chemical manufacturers in various toxic tort cases involving claims of workplace exposure to benzene and hydrocarbon solvents allegedly causing various forms of cancer. Favorably settled all cases.
  • Represented major American basic cable and satellite news television channel and popular talk show host in a defamation suit brought by a celebrity seeking millions in damages.
  • Represented a private mortgage company in a breach of contract suit against a private bank for false representations made in connection with the sale of multiple loans.
  • Favorably settled lawsuit for private mortgage company alleged to have breached contract by failing to disclose borrowers’ liabilities in connection with a loan.
  • Obtained permanent injunction on behalf of a major energy drink company in a case involving trademark and trade dress infringement, unfair competition, and copyright infringement claims.

Activities

Bety is on the board of directors, and chairs the Nominating Committee, of the Los Angeles chapter of the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF), the largest nationwide charitable organization in North America solely devoted to supporting cancer research in Israel for the benefit of all mankind. She also serves as an advisory board member for the Institute for Corporate Counsel.

Bety is also actively involved with UCLA School of Law. She is involved with UCLA Law Women LEAD, an initiative addressing the distinct challenges women alumnae throughout their careers. She also serves as a representative on the UCLA Law Firm Challenge and volunteers her time with the Moot Court program.

Bety is an active member of Women Attorneys At Venable (WAVe), a diverse group of women attorneys whose mission is to improve the rate of retention, promotion, and advancement of women attorneys within the firm, and to increase the number and strength of women attorney applicants.

Bety is committed to serving pro bono clients, working regularly with the Alliance for Children’s Rights. For example, she helped a family adopt a beautiful baby girl on National Adoption Day. And, through several mediations, she helped premature triplets obtain much needed early intervention speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other educational services.

Outside of work, she enjoys playing poker, basketball, and cycling.
