Christina Lee Gaarder

Partner

Christina Gaarder is a partner in the firm's Product Liability and Mass Torts Practice Group. For over 20 years, she has represented pharmaceutical and product manufacturers in state and federal courts nationwide. In addition, she handles commercial litigation matters. She has both jury and non-jury trial experience in both state and federal courts, and appellate experience in the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, the Maryland Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Christina has been part of national representations, involving both MDLs and consolidated state court actions. As part of that representation, she has helped formulate the defense strategy for handling the litigation in an efficient and effective manner, and worked with attorneys from around the country to coordinate the company‚Äôs defense. She has overseen the day-to-day case management, developed and worked with experts, handled the factual development of the cases, briefed and argued summary judgment and Daubert motions, coordinated pretrial preparations, and participated in trials.

She was named one of Benchmark Litigation's Top 250 Women in Litigation in 2012.

Significant Matters

  • Part of Venable team serving as National Coordinating Counsel for international pharmaceutical Defendant in multiple jurisdictions in lawsuits involving prescription osteoporosis medication and multiple allegations of injury. Responsibilities included participating in the development of overall case strategy, overseeing case management, overseeing and managing local counsel, coordinating offensive and defensive discovery, and handling individual case work up through depositions.
  • Part of Venable team serving as National Counsel for an international pharmaceutical Defendants in multiple jurisdictions in lawsuits involving a medication involving multiple allegations of an array of birth injuries. Responsibilities included participating in the development of overall case strategy, overseeing case management, handling individual case work up through depositions, overseeing pretrial preparations, and assisting and participating in pretrial argument.
  • Member of trial team for international pharmaceutical Defendant in lawsuit involving a prescription epilepsy medication which resulted in a defense verdict.
  • Primary responsibility for expert and scientific development in vaccine litigation, including responsibility for identifying and preparing defense expert witnesses on issues relating to efficacy and immunogenicity.
  • Primary responsibility for cases involving a generic osteoporosis medication alleged to cause jaw injuries. The cases were coordinated through an MDL and after discovery and motions practice, all suits against the client were dismissed.
  • Primary responsibility for cases involving a hormone replacement therapy medication with allegations of multiple injuries including breast cancer.
  • Representation of Ford Motor Company in Maryland and the District of Columbia in products liability matters involving both personal injury and property damages, including first-chair trial responsibility.
