Venable partner Jamie Barnett was quoted in a January 27, 2017, Communications Daily article on a white paper issued by the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Public Safety Bureau on communications sector cybersecurity regulation. The white paper, issued two days before former FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler announced his resignation, said the commission cannot rely on organic market incentives alone to reduce the risk of cyberattacks and that the federal government needs to provide appropriate regulatory oversight. Despite the recommendation, they are not expected to influence new Chairman Ajit Pai's approach to cybersecurity.

"I'm not expecting the FCC to move on a lot of new cybersecurity initiatives," said Barnett. "What will be interesting to see is whether future [iterations of the Communications Security, Reliability and Interoperability Council] will address cybersecurity issues."
