Venable partner Jamie Barnett was quoted in a March 3, 2017, Communications Daily article on three bills introduced by House Commerce Committee Democrats aimed at requiring the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to strengthen its cybersecurity policies. The new bills would require the FCC to adopt communications sector-centric cybersecurity rules, establish an interagency committee to review cyber incidents and recommend investigations or issue reports, and establish cybersecurity certification standards for IoT devices.

The bills appear to be "pointed towards getting the FCC more involved in cybersecurity, not less," according to Barnett. "The substance and merits of the bills are not likely to get serious consideration unless they can secure Republican sponsorship, and I think that is improbable."
