Venable partner and retired Navy Rear Admiral Jamie Barnett was quoted in an April 29, 2014 FedScoop article on the Defense Department’s efforts to build its cyber-force. The Pentagon is facing challenges in efforts due to the nation’s falling competitiveness in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.

“The need for outstanding cybersecurity skills is pressurizing traditional education,” said Admiral Barnett. “Those students who are not doing well in subjects like the humanities and English, but excel at math, science and computer languages are starting to find opportunities, sometimes without degrees or traditional educational paths. While we cannot back away from the concept of well-rounded students, opening up avenues for non-traditional approaches may be one way to address the need for a larger pool” of job candidates.”
