On June 20, 2011, ICANN approved adding new generic top-level domain names (gTLDs). Current examples of gTLDs include .com, .net, .edu, and .gov. This was a long-awaited development that will finally open up to all applicants starting in January, 2012. The application period will last for 90 days and will be followed by a publication and evaluation period. It is expected that the new gTLDs will be operational in 2013.
