James E. Nelson and William T. Russell, who focus on technology and outsourcing transactions as part of their general corporate practice, have joined the firm as partners in the New York office. Their arrival was noted in numerous trade publications, including AmLaw, Law360, JD Journal, New York Law Journal and the New York Lawyer.

The two attorneys joined Venable from DLA Piper, where they served as New York co-heads of DLA Piper's Technology & Sourcing practice. According to Nelson, the two had been shopping for a new firm together and chose Venable because of its flexibility with regard to staffing and pricing, as well as its openness to alternative fee arrangements.

"[Venable] just has a better structure to go out and provide a range of services," Nelson told Law360. Russell said that he joined the firm because of the strength of its existing client base.

Having worked together since 1998, Russell and Nelson have represented clients on transactions for offshore and onshore operations and have experience assisting clients with developing, licensing and distributing intellectual property assets.

"Jim Nelson and Bill Russell bring a substantial portfolio of big-ticket transactional experience, especially in deals involving key IP and technology assets," said Chuck Morton, co-chair of Venable's business transactions group.
