Venable partner Jeff Knowles was quoted in an October 27, 2011 article in Digital Transactions that recapped key comments and news from the recent Electronic Transactions Association’s Compliance Day conference in Chicago.

Speaking about the government’s desire to thwart fraud by merchants, Knowles said, “Increased oversight could crimp legitimate business. A corporate entity can have legitimate purposes in setting up multiple merchant accounts” He added, “It’s not always apparent what the marketer’s intent is.”

Knowles also commented on the fact that the time it takes for the payment industry to resolve disputed charges is often longer than the government would like, saying, “The FTC wants it fixed yesterday … I think payment processors are at risk for not moving quickly,” he said.
