On August 9, 2014, at the annual meeting of the American Bar Association in Boston, Venable partner Jim Hanks was elected to the Council of the ABA’s Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar for a three-year term. The Section's Council is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) as the national accrediting agency for programs leading to a law degree. The Section has more than 10,000 members and strives to improve legal education and attorney licensing by fostering cooperation among legal educators, practitioners and judges through workshops, conferences and publications. The Section also studies and makes recommendations for the improvement of the bar admission process.

For the Section, Hanks has served on the Standards Review Committee and on the Accreditation Committee, and on several law school site evaluation teams. He has been active in the ABA Section of Business Law and is a member of The American Law Institute. Hanks is also a Senior Lecturer at Northwestern Law School and a Visiting Senior Lecturer at Cornell Business School.
