Joseph Leonard Robbins

Joe Robbins is an associate in Venable's Commercial Litigation and Consumer Financial Services Groups, where he assists companies with litigation, enforcement, regulatory compliance, regulatory approval, and transactional matters. His breadth of consumer financial services expertise includes mortgage origination, mortgage servicing, mortgage sales and securitization, debt collection, credit monitoring, credit reporting, student loans, credit cards, personal and payday loans, auto loans, and FinTech.

Joe counsels and represents clients in matters involving fair lending (FHA, ECOA, HMDA), UDAP/UDAAP, Dodd-Frank, FDCPA, TCPA, MERS, TILA, RESPA, GSEs, FIRREA, FCA, Card Act, CRA, FCRA, HAMP, usury laws, licensing, arbitration agreements, advertising and marketing, privacy, the CFPB, FTC, and HUD. He has published articles about these subjects in various publications, including Venable's Consumer Financial Services Digest.

Joe has also assisted hotel, construction, real estate, and natural gas public utility industry clients with respect to contract drafting and interpretation, merger, and shareholder/director/officer fiduciary duty matters.

Joe has represented clients in all phases of litigation including appeal; in federal and state courts; and in class actions, government-brought litigation, and individual consumer suits. He has argued and secured dismissal in court, settled cases in mediation, and won at trial.

He is active in the ABA's Business Law Section, as an appointed Young Lawyer Liaison to its Consumer Financial Services Committee and a member of the Business and Corporate Litigation Committee. In his pro bono practice, Joe has helped low-income families avoid eviction and homelessness in landlord-tenant matters. He regularly volunteers at the D.C. Bar Landlord Tenant Resource Center and Consumer Law Resource Center.

Prior to joining Venable in 2017, Joe was an associate at Goodwin Procter for several years. He graduated magna cum laude from Fordham Law School, where he interned for the Ghana Supreme Court, was online managing editor of the public policy-focused Fordham Urban Law Journal, worked in the Securities Arbitration and Mediation clinics, and competed on the Dispute Resolution team. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics, summa cum laude, from the George Washington University. Prior to attending GWU, Joe was a U.S. Senate page for Sen. Edward Kennedy and an intern for two Massachusetts state legislators.
