On Monday, Venable announced that Larry Norton, formerly General Counsel at the Federal Election Commission, has joined the firm as a partner and co-chair of the political law practice group in Washington, DC. Norton advises public and private companies, nonprofits, and trade associations on a wide range of political and election law issues, including establishing and operating federal and state PACs, Super-PACs, 527 groups, and issue advocacy organizations, and their use of traditional and social media. He began his legal career as a litigation associate at Venable.

Since joining the firm, multiple publication have highlighted Norton’s move including the May 8, 2012 editions of The Blog of Legal Times, National Journal, The Hill, Politico, Commercial and Dispute Resolution (subscription required).

In an interview with The Blog of Legal Times, Norton said many practice groups cross over with political law. “Businesses and trade organizations that are looking to influence the political process can do so more than ever but there are a significant number of laws restricting that,” said Norton. “There is a lot of change right now regarding corporate responsibility and oversight of political spending, gifts and lobbying activity.”
