Venable partner David Strickland was quoted in an April 25, 2017, article in The Recorder on the California Department of Motor Vehicles revised proposal for the regulation of self-driving cars. Among the proposed revisions, the DMV abandoned requirements that manufactures said codified voluntary federal safety standards, eliminated the need for companies to seek permission from counties and cities where they test, and opened the door for testing of vehicles without drivers.

"The DMV's proposed revisions to California's draft regulations address a number of elements released in September of 2016 that would have precluded self-driving cars from being tested and deployed in California," said Strickland.
