Venable represented Legg Mason, Inc. in the sale of 1919 Investment Counsel & Trust Company, N.A., formerly known as Legg Mason Investment Counsel & Trust Company, N.A. (1919 Investment Counsel) to Stifel Financial Corp., which closed on November 7, 2014. 1919 Investment Counsel is comprised of a registered investment advisor and a nationally chartered trust company, and provides tailored investment counsel as well as family office and trust services for individuals, families, trusts, endowments, foundations and institutions and also acts as investment manager for four mutual funds. 1919 Investment Counsel manages over $9 billion in assets.

Eric R. Smith, assisted by Lindsay McCrory Monti and Gueter Aurelien, led the Venable team advising Legg Mason on the transaction.
