Matthew Stern helps provide clients with practical legal advice to navigate the dynamic and complex consumer privacy and data security landscape. Matt provides counsel on industry best practices to help clients avoid risk and maximize success. A decade spent working at the U.S. Senate and U.S. Department of Education before beginning his legal career has afforded Matt keen insight into federal government operations in legislation, implementation, and oversight. He uses this knowledge to more effectively help clients evaluate privacy enforcement risks and counsel them on compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.

Matt's most recent federal government experience was as the assistant director for policy and intergovernmental affairs at the National Assessment Governing Board, U.S. Department of Education, where he crafted legislative, budget, and appropriations recommendations; engaged with key stakeholders on Capitol Hill; and framed policy issues for the board's consideration. Prior to joining the board staff, Matt was a professional staff member for the U.S. Senate's Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, developing K-12 education policy and legislative strategy for the committee.

Matt was a Venable summer associate during law school and worked as a senior staff member of the Administrative Law Review.
